An IRONMAN is a 3.8km swim, 180km bike and 42.2km run, and most athletes fit the training around a full-time job and a family. The hard part is rarely the sessions themselves. It is knowing what to do when life gets in the way, how hard to go on the long ride, how much to eat, and when to back off.
That is where a coach makes the difference. Your OE coach plans every week, reviews every session and adjusts the plan as you go, so you reach the start line fit, healthy and with a race plan you have already rehearsed.

OE has had IRONMAN World Championship (Kona) qualifiers every year since 2019, and OE men and women qualify for the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in solid numbers every year. Some of our recent IRONMAN and IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship athletes:

Just as importantly, we coach first-timers to strong, well-paced finishes at races like IRONMAN Wales, Copenhagen and Tallinn.
We talk through your race, your history, your weekly hours and what success looks like for you, then match you with the right coach.
Your coach reviews your training in TrainingPeaks and changes the plan as life changes: work trips, illness, niggles or a great block that means you are ready for more.
A clear pacing plan for the bike and run, a fuelling plan you have practised, and a debrief afterwards to set up your next goal.
We coach both full-distance IRONMAN and half-distance IRONMAN 70.3. Many athletes do a 70.3 first. If you are not sure which is right for you, read IRONMAN 70.3 vs full IRONMAN: which should you do first? or our complete guide to training for your first IRONMAN 70.3.
We also know the UK races well. Our coaches have raced and coached at IRONMAN Wales for years; see our IRONMAN Wales course and race-day tips. If you are targeting a European race, read IRONMAN Copenhagen: when should you get a coach?
The 2027 IRONMAN World Championship takes place in Kona, Hawaii on Saturday 9 October 2027, and qualifying races for it are already under way. Since 2026, IRONMAN has used a performance-based slot system:
Which race you choose, and how you pace it, matters more than ever. We help athletes pick a qualifying race that suits their strengths and build a plan to give them the best shot at a slot. Always check the latest rules on ironman.com before you enter.

No, plenty of people finish an IRONMAN on a free plan. A coach earns their fee by fitting the training around your real life, adjusting it when work, family or injury get in the way, and getting your pacing and fuelling right on race day. Most of our athletes come to us because they want to finish stronger, avoid the mistakes of a first attempt, or chase a PB or qualification.
1-2-1 IRONMAN and 70.3 coaching with Optimal Endurance costs £125–£175 a month, depending on your coach and the level of support. There are no gold, silver or bronze packages, and every athlete starts with a free consultation call.
Ideally six to nine months before a full-distance IRONMAN and four to six months before a 70.3, so there is time for a proper base, build, race-specific and taper phase. We can still help with a shorter run-in; we will just be honest about what is realistic.
Coaching is delivered online through TrainingPeaks, with scheduled calls and unlimited text and email contact, so you can be anywhere in the UK or abroad. If you are near Harpenden, Hertfordshire or London you can add in-person sessions, gait analysis and bike position checks.
Yes. OE has had IRONMAN World Championship qualifiers every year since 2019, and OE men and women qualify for the 70.3 World Championship every year. We will help you choose the right qualifying race, train for it and pace it to give yourself the best shot at a slot.
It depends on your background and goals, but most age-groupers build from around 8–10 hours a week up to 12–15 hours in their biggest weeks. Your coach builds the plan around the hours you actually have, not the hours a generic plan assumes.
Tell us about your race and your goals, and we will match you with the right IRONMAN coach.
