How Online Triathlon Coaching Works (and Whether It's Right for You)

I get some version of this question on almost every free consultation call: "So how does this actually work if you're not stood next to me on the pool deck?"

Fair question. "Online coaching" gets thrown around so loosely. By apps, by generic plan sellers, by people running 300 athletes off a template, that it's lost most of its meaning. So let's strip it back to what it actually looks like when it's done properly, because it's not a downloaded PDF and it's not a Zoom call once a fortnight either.

It's Not the Plan. It's the Relationship Around the Plan.

Anyone can hand you a 12-week block of swim/bike/run/strength sessions. That's a training plan, not coaching and I've written before about the difference between a training plan and a coach, so I won't repeat myself here. Online coaching, done right, is that same close relationship you'd get from a local coach you just never need to be in the same postcode.

Here's what that looks like week to week with us:

Sessions land in TrainingPeaks, tailored to your week. Not a fixed template rolling out regardless of what's happening in your life. If you tell me your work trip got moved or your kid's got a sports day, the week gets rebuilt around it not ignored.

Feedback isn't an afterthought. Sessions gets reviewed. Power files, pace, HR, RPE notes. I'm looking at what actually happened, not just ticking a box that says "workout complete." Where it matters, that feedback comes with a phone call, not just a comment box.

You're not rationed to one email a month. Unlimited text and email contact is built in, plus a scheduled call on the cadence that suits you. If your long run felt awful on Tuesday, you don't sit on that until your "monthly check-in."

You're not training in isolation. Our athletes get access to a WhatsApp squad. People doing the same IRONMAN Wales build as you, at 6am when it's just you, a headtorch and a very reluctant alarm clock. That community piece matters more than most athletes expect going in.

The bits you'd expect from any decent coach are still there. Race planning, fuelling and hydration strategy, kit and equipment advice, strength and conditioning guidance, and access to team discounts with the likes of Precision Fuel & Hydration and Parcours.

Where It Genuinely Doesn't Replace Being There

I'll be straight with you, because I'd rather lose your business now than have you feel misled in month three. Online coaching can't put hands on your bike to fit it, and it can't stand on a pool deck and fix your catch in real time from your phone footage alone not with the same precision. What it can do is coach the other 95% of your training with more attention and more accountability than most people get from a coach they see in person once a month. For the technical one-percenters, we lean on video analysis and, when it's worth it, point you toward the right specialist.

Who Actually Gets the Most Out of It

Most of our athletes aren't full-time triathletes. They're juggling jobs, families and training around a life that doesn't pause for a taper week. Online coaching suits you if you want a plan built around your reality rather than the other way round, and if you're disciplined enough to log your own sessions honestly. It's genuinely global too, we coach athletes across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, the US and Australia, all through exactly the same system, because the format doesn't care about time zones nearly as much as people assume.

If you want the format taken further, our Mallorca training camps or UK Based training weekends are how we bridge the gap, a week of in-person coaching layered on top of the remote relationship you've already built.

Curious whether it's the right fit before your race season starts? Book a free consultation and we'll talk it through properly, no obligation.

Thanks, Ross

FAQs

How does online triathlon coaching actually work day to day? Your sessions are delivered through TrainingPeaks, adjusted around your week, with feedback on every completed workout and regular scheduled calls — plus unlimited text and email contact in between.

Is online triathlon coaching as effective as in-person coaching? For the vast majority of training — structure, feedback, accountability, race planning — yes. The main gap is hands-on technical work like bike fitting, which we handle through video review or a specialist referral where needed. See our full coaching plans and pricing.

How much does online triathlon coaching cost in the UK? Our 1-2-1 coaching starts from £80 a month for a single discipline, rising depending on the coach and whether you need full triathlon coverage. Every athlete starts with a free phone consultation to talk through what's right for your goals.

Do I need to live near my coach for remote coaching to work? No — that's the entire point. We coach athletes across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, the US and Australia through the same TrainingPeaks-based system, so location genuinely doesn't limit what we can do together.

What's the difference between online coaching and a training app? An app gives you a generic, algorithm-adjusted plan. Online coaching means a human coach reviewing your actual sessions and adapting your training to your life — we've broken this down in more detail in Triathlon Coach vs. Training Plan vs. App.

Can online coaching prepare me for a specific race like IRONMAN Wales? Yes — race-specific planning is core to what we do. If you're weighing up whether now's the time to bring in a coach, How to Find the Right IRONMAN Coach is a good next read.
